Golden Ground Coffee

About us

Like so many origin stories, Golden Ground found it's way here through trials and tribulation.

Staring in the late 2018, with a passion for coffee but no access to quality, Claus Obermeyer roasted his first ever coffee batch. It was awful. It needed to be. With this first challenge he invested time and diligence in understanding the chemistry in the perfect roasted bean.

A little background is needed here. He was, for a long time, ever-present in the Stellenbosch wine scene. This is where the idea to roast for terroir originated. And so, with focus on flavor and inherent qualities of coffee, the roastery really took off.

The original roasting

The name at the time was Gooseberry Roasters. A small-time micro-roastery focused on developing amazing coffee, true to African single-origins. In 2022, the Gooseberry Coffee Studio opened in Johannesburg. This was unfortunately not the success story that was hoped for. The shop then closed in 2023 and with it hopes of that good, sought-after coffee...

.. or so we thought.

In 2024, the demand and desire for the beans from Gooseberry Roasters had such a strong pull that the roastery was reopened. However, this time, the mistakes made before have been learnt.

Golden Ground was formed. This time to do what always made sense. Ensuring the highest-quality coffee finds its way into the hands of the appreciators. And so with reopening, many smiles and great coffee moments have returned.
