Rwenzori: The "Mountains of the Moon" and Uganda’s Specialty Coffee Gem
The Rwenzori Mountains—often referred to as the “Mountains of the Moon”—form a majestic range in western Uganda, straddling the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rising to over 5,000 meters, the Rwenzoris are not only a UNESCO World Heritage site but also a fertile and increasingly celebrated coffee-growing region. Here, smallholder farmers cultivate high-quality Arabica in rich soils under misty forest canopies, producing coffees of deep sweetness and vibrant character.
Growing Conditions and Varietals
Altitude:
Coffee is grown on the lush slopes of the Rwenzoris at elevations ranging from 1,400 to 2,000 meters above sea level, with some farms climbing even higher. This high altitude is critical for developing dense, slow-ripening cherries that lead to complex and flavorful cups.
Soil & Climate:
The region features fertile volcanic soils, nourished by glacial melt and rainforest conditions. A cool, wet climate with frequent mists and cloud cover contributes to gradual cherry development and strong expression of flavor.
Varietals:
The main varietals cultivated are SL14 and SL28, both well-adapted to the region’s climate and known for producing vibrant acidity, fruit-forward profiles, and excellent cup clarity.
Production and Processing
Coffee in the Rwenzori region is primarily grown by smallholder farmers, many of whom cultivate fewer than 1,000 trees on family plots. Traditionally known for natural (dry) processing, the region has in recent years embraced improved post-harvest methods that boost both quality and consistency.
Processing:
Most Rwenzori coffee is naturally processed, with cherries carefully sorted and dried on raised beds. When well-executed, this method intensifies sweetness and brings out bold fruit characteristics—especially in high-elevation micro-lots. Washed and honey-processed coffees are emerging in select areas, adding further diversity to the region's offerings.
Key Processing Stations:
Notable facilities include Bukonzo Joint, Kisinga, and Nyabirongo, each working closely with farmer cooperatives to elevate quality and bring traceable lots to the specialty market.
Cup Profile
Uganda Rwenzori Mountain coffee is known for its rich, fruit-driven profile, often featuring notes of dried berries, plum, cocoa, and tropical fruits, with a full body and round, winey acidity. Natural processed lots in particular can be bold, jammy, and sweet—ideal for adventurous palates and fruit-forward blends.
